With all these great colors surrounding us, why paint in black and white?

It almost seems cruel. But actually, it’s for their own good. They start out learning tone and value and not having to bother about getting color right.

It limits the palette so you have one less choice to worry about.

So our youngest painters, Tristan and Sawyer have yet to do a color study.

If they master the basics, then they will move on to the complex realm of COLOR! Who knew painting could be so complicated?

Even their dad opted to do a black and white study today. Going back to the basics keeps your skills honed and your craft razor sharp. Should I tell them that all it takes for me to use black and white or color is the tap of a button?  Would that be mean?

It would be mean. Momma will keep that tidbit to herself.
